COLA AND CANDY
 
Summer at the swimming pool, a baseball game, or the drive in theater smelled the same to me: like cola and candy. 
The counter held everything that made life worth living. Cold bottles sweating in the dark. Rows of sugar-dusted treasures that tasted like a reward for surviving the heat. Tacky palms. Loose change. The heavy weight of deciding how to spend a dollar.
The budget only allowed for one.
The deliberation was the best part.
