Wellington Swimming Pool 1938
The center of summer life, The Wellington Swimming Pool was built in 1938 and was a beautiful, gleaming white Art Deco swimming pool where we all went as kids to cool off and play in the ice cold water. Constructed in a different age, the Wellington pool served as the quiet stage for a thousand small milestones. The first tentative strokes in the shallow end. The bravery of the high dive. The sting of July sun and the easy bonds of a summer afternoon.
The concrete grew restless with heat before the sun hit its peak. Lifeguards presided over a chaos of ignored whistles. The deep end felt like a gateway to another world, and the concession stand held the secret to a glass bottle of soda that never tasted as sharp or as sweet as it did right there.
Some landmarks don’t really vanish.
They simply settle into the marrow of the people who grew up within them.
